Description

Systematic position: This pest belongs to the Psychidae family within the order Lepidoptera. Members of this genus are specialized larvae that construct protective cases, known as bags, composed of silk and environmental debris such as leaf fragments, bark, or twigs, which they inhabit throughout their larval stage.

Host plants and damage: Kotochalia species, most notably the wattle bagworm (Kotochalia junodi), are notorious defoliators of various forest and orchard trees. They frequently infest species such as Acacia and Eucalyptus. The economic impact is high, as the larvae can cause total defoliation, leading to stunted growth, reduced timber quality, and the potential death of vulnerable young trees.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves a unique reproductive strategy where adult females are often wingless and remain inside their larval cases. Males are winged and actively seek out females for mating. Once fertilized, the female lays eggs inside the case. The emerging larvae immediately begin to construct their own mobile bags, which grow progressively larger as the larvae develop.

Character of damage: The damage is primarily defoliation. As larvae feed, they consume leaf tissue, which reduces the plant's ability to photosynthesize. In cases of severe infestation, the tree canopy becomes sparse, which stresses the plant, slows down biomass accumulation, and makes the tree prone to secondary attacks by wood-boring insects or fungal pathogens.

Control measures: Management of Kotochalia is challenging because the protective bag acts as a physical barrier against chemical sprays. Control tactics include mechanical removal of bags where feasible, biological control using parasitoid wasps that specifically target bagworms, and the application of systemic or stomach-poison insecticides timed precisely to the larval emergence period.
