Description
Systematic position. The lesser earwig (Labia minor) belongs to the order Dermaptera and the family Spongiphoridae (or Forficulidae in broader classification). Unlike its larger relatives, this insect is significantly smaller and often associates with decaying organic matter and compost piles in agricultural and residential settings.
Target crops and damage. This pest acts as a polyphage, causing damage to various vegetable crops, seedling starts, flower buds, and ripening fruits. The damage typically appears as ragged, irregular holes in leaves and petals. In young seedlings, earwigs can cause substantial losses by consuming succulent stems and leaves overnight.
Biology and life cycle. Lesser earwigs undergo incomplete metamorphosis. The life cycle begins with eggs deposited in moist soil or organic debris, protected by the female. Nymphs resemble miniature adults and progress through several instars. Their population levels often fluctuate based on soil moisture and the availability of sheltering sites, peaking during warm, humid summer months.
Economic impact. While their role as decomposers is beneficial in nature, in gardening, they become pests when populations explode. The primary impact includes the destruction of aesthetics in flowers and quality loss in produce. Furthermore, the nocturnal feeding habits make them difficult to control, as they remain hidden in soil crevices or under debris during daylight hours.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control:
- Sanitation: Remove piles of leaf litter, wood, and organic debris where they hide.
- Trapping: Use rolled-up wet newspapers, corrugated cardboard, or inverted pots with straw to collect and remove clusters of insects.
- Moisture management: Improve drainage and avoid over-mulching near the stems of sensitive crops.
- Chemical control: Apply targeted insecticides only as a last resort when infestation levels threaten significant crop yields.
