Description
The lesser earwig (Labia minor) belongs to the order Dermaptera and the family Spongiiphoridae. It is significantly smaller than the common earwig, usually measuring between 4 and 7 mm in length. Its body is light brown and covered in fine, yellow hairs, giving it a distinct, slightly fuzzy appearance compared to its larger relatives.
These insects are primarily associated with decaying organic matter, such as manure piles, compost heaps, and damp soil. Unlike many other earwig species, the lesser earwig is a strong flier and is frequently attracted to the odors emitted by fermenting plant materials or decomposing organic waste in agricultural environments.
The lifecycle follows incomplete metamorphosis, with females showing maternal care by guarding their eggs and early-stage nymphs. Development is temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple generations per year in temperate climates. Because of their nocturnal nature, they spend daylight hours hidden deep within soil crevices or beneath debris, which makes detecting an infestation challenging until significant damage is already done.
The damage caused by Labia minor typically involves feeding on the cotyledons, young leaves, and tender stems of emerging vegetable seedlings. While they often act as saprophages feeding on dead material, high population densities lead them to attack live vegetation. This feeding behavior causes stunted growth and thinning of crop stands, while providing entry points for secondary pathogens and fungi.
