These beetles are primarily found in Southern Europe and neighboring regions, where they act as significant foliage feeders on various woody plants.

Affected crops and damage. The pest primarily targets deciduous fruit trees such as apple, pear, and almond, as well as several forest tree species like oak. The adult beetles feed aggressively on leaves, creating irregular holes and consuming leaf tissues. High infestation levels can lead to severe defoliation, weakening the tree's health and reducing its photosynthetic capacity.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Hibernation usually takes place during the winter months, with the insects overwintering in the soil or under leaf litter. With the arrival of spring temperatures, the adults emerge to feed on young buds and leaves, eventually mating and laying eggs for the next generation. Larvae are known to develop within protective cases.

Nature of damage. The primary injury is caused by the adults, which feed on both young and mature foliage. The damage pattern typically involves "shot-hole" effects or ragged leaf margins. In cases of massive outbreaks, the cumulative loss of leaf area significantly stresses the plant, slows down shoot growth, and impairs the development of fruit buds for the subsequent season.
