Grain flat beetle

The grain flat beetle (Laemophloeus ater) is a small coleopteran insect belonging to the family Laemophloeidae. It is recognized as a significant pest of stored grain, cereals, and various plant-based food products, often found in warehouses, processing plants, and domestic storage facilities.

This pest primarily attacks grains of wheat, rye, corn, and barley, as well as processed products like flour and oilseeds. It is typically considered a secondary pest because it thrives best on grain that has already been damaged by other insects or mechanical handling, though it can survive on intact kernels under suitable conditions.

The life cycle of the grain flat beetle is heavily influenced by environmental conditions within storage sites, specifically temperature and humidity. The lifecycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Favorable conditions with high humidity allow for rapid development and reproduction, leading to high infestations in a short period.

The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by the consumption of the germ and endosperm of the seed. High populations lead to significant weight loss in stored goods, contamination with frass, and a reduction in the seed's viability for sowing purposes. Large infestations often lead to a heating effect within the stored grain mass.

Successful management of Laemophloeus ater relies on a combination of rigorous sanitation and environmental control. Key steps include:

• maintaining grain moisture below 14%;
• cleaning facilities to remove residual grain and dust;
• implementing proper pest monitoring programs;
