Lagria hirta
Lagria hirta
Description
Lagria hirta is a beetle belonging to the family Tenebrionidae within the order Coleoptera. The adult insect is characterized by a body length of 7–10 mm, densely covered with fine hairs, which gives it a distinct matte appearance. The elytra are typically bronze or brownish in color, while the head and pronotum are darker, providing a cryptic camouflage on various plants.
This pest is known as a polyphage, meaning it consumes a wide variety of plant species. It causes significant economic damage to fruit trees, berry bushes, vineyards, and field crops such as potatoes, sugar beets, and legumes. The beetles feed primarily on the foliage and, in some cases, the reproductive parts of the plants, causing structural damage.
The life cycle of the beetle is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in the soil or under leaf litter, surviving cold temperatures in a dormant state. Pupation occurs in the spring, and adult beetles emerge in early summer. The adult stage is the most active and is typically observed feeding from June through July.
The damage caused by Lagria hirta is primarily characterized by the skeletonization of leaves. Beetles consume leaf tissue between the veins, creating irregular holes. Heavy infestations can lead to severe defoliation, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, stunts growth, and results in substantial yield losses, particularly in younger or stressed crops.
- Implement deep autumn plowing to disturb overwintering larvae in the soil.
- Maintain weed-free field margins to reduce shelters for adult beetles.
- Monitor crop fields closely during the early summer emergence period.
- Apply authorized insecticides if the pest population exceeds economic thresholds.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. By combining cultural practices, such as soil cultivation, with chemical control only when necessary, farmers can successfully mitigate the impact of this beetle. Regular scouting is critical for early detection to prevent widespread damage to orchards and vegetable fields.
