Lagria nigricollis

Lagria nigricollis is a beetle species belonging to the family Tenebrionidae (darkling beetles) and the order Coleoptera. Unlike many of its relatives which are primarily associated with stored products, this species is commonly found in field environments where it interacts with various green plants during its adult life stage.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including various legumes, cereals, and garden vegetables. The beetles demonstrate a preference for tender plant tissues such as young leaves and floral structures. Their presence in agricultural fields can lead to significant biomass reduction and physiological stress for the host plants during their active growth phase.

The biological cycle of this beetle includes four developmental stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage typically inhabits the soil or organic debris, feeding on decomposing matter, but in high density, they can damage roots of seedlings. The adult beetles are highly mobile and emerge to feed on the aerial parts of plants, completing the reproductive cycle during the summer season.

The primary damage caused by Lagria nigricollis involves the skeletonization of leaves, where the beetles consume the leaf blade while leaving the veins intact. This reduction in the leaf surface area inhibits photosynthesis, leading to reduced vigor and stunted growth. In severe cases of infestation, the loss of floral organs directly correlates to lower yield outputs in seed and fruit-bearing crops.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and intervention. Farmers are advised to maintain field sanitation to eliminate potential larval habitats and to employ crop rotation to disrupt the life cycle.
