The Lambdina genus comprises several species of geometrid moths, many of which are recognized as significant forest pests. Often referred to as looper moths, these insects are notorious for their periodic population outbreaks that can cause extensive defoliation in vast tracts of coniferous forests, particularly in North America.
Taxonomically, Lambdina belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Geometridae. The larvae, or loopers, derive their common name from the distinct way they move by arching their bodies. While adult moths are typically nocturnal and harmless to foliage, the larval stage is highly destructive due to its voracious feeding habits.
The primary hosts for these pests include various species of conifers, such as hemlock, spruce, and fir. In some instances, they may also target hardwoods.
