Hemlock looper

Systematic position. The hemlock looper (Lambdina fiscellaria) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. It is a major defoliating insect that periodically causes extensive damage to coniferous forests, particularly in North American ecosystems.

Host plants and damage. The primary hosts include eastern hemlock, spruce, fir, and pine. The larvae are voracious defoliators capable of stripping entire trees of their foliage within a single season, which can cause significant tree mortality or weaken the stand enough to attract wood-boring secondary insects.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage, which are laid on bark or lichen. Larvae emerge in the spring, coinciding with the flushing of buds, and feed on current and old foliage before pupating in the ground cover or bark crevices.

Nature of damage. The damage is characterized by a thinning canopy and a reddish-brown appearance of the foliage. Larvae often chew through the base of needles, causing them to drop to the forest floor without being fully consumed, which creates a distinct "raining" debris effect under infested trees during peak feeding periods.
