The Pea blue butterfly, scientifically known as Lampides boeticus, is a moth species belonging to the Lycaenidae family within the order Lepidoptera. While often recognized for its migratory patterns, it is also a significant agricultural pest in many temperate and tropical regions across the globe.

This insect primarily infests plants in the Fabaceae family. Its hosts include a wide variety of legumes, most notably peas, beans, soybeans, and lentils. In many regions, it is considered a primary pest of pulse crops, significantly impacting both yield quality and quantity by feeding directly on the reproductive structures.

The lifecycle of Lampides boeticus consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs individually on the flower buds or young pods. The emerging larvae bore directly into the pod, where they consume the developing seeds. The larval stage is the most destructive phase of the insect's lifecycle.

Damage caused by the larvae is characterized by circular entry holes in the pods and the total destruction of the seeds inside. As the larvae feed, they often introduce pathogens that cause the pods to rot or shrivel, making them unusable. High infestations can lead to substantial economic losses, particularly in late-season legume crops.

Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Maintaining field hygiene, such as removing crop residues, helps reduce the overwintering population. Biological control using parasitoid wasps can be effective, while chemical interventions involve the use of targeted insecticides applied during the peak egg-laying period to prevent larvae from entering the pods.
