The raspberry moth (Lampronia tenuicornis) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Prodoxidae. This species is recognized as a significant pest in berry production, specifically targeting raspberries. Its presence can lead to considerable yield reduction if management strategies are not implemented in time.
The primary host for this pest is the raspberry plant. Larvae cause damage by feeding on emerging buds, developing shoots, and floral structures. This feeding activity disrupts the plant's growth pattern, prevents normal bud burst, and can lead to the wilting and death of young stems.
The life cycle of the moth is closely tied to the host plant's phenology. Larvae overwinter in small, resilient cocoons hidden within bark crevices or at the base of canes. As temperatures rise in early spring, they emerge to infest the buds, feeding on the tender internal tissues before the foliage fully develops.
Damage symptoms include hollowed-out buds that fail to open and wilting shoot tips. After completing their larval development, they pupate within the damaged plant material or in the soil surface debris. Adult moths typically emerge during the flowering stage, at which point the cycle continues with egg-laying in the developing fruit.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical tactics. Sanitization is paramount: pruning and destroying infested shoots early in the season significantly reduces the next generation's population. When chemical intervention is necessary, insecticides should be applied before the flowering stage to protect pollinators and ensure residue-free berries.
