Description
The Cigarette beetle (Lasioderma serricorne) belongs to the family Anobiidae, order Coleoptera. It is recognized globally as a major pest of stored products, particularly known for its ability to damage tobacco, spices, and dried plant commodities in storage facilities.
This pest is highly polyphagous, infesting a vast array of items including cured tobacco, dry pet food, cocoa beans, dried fruits, cereal products, and even some botanical ingredients. Its presence is often discovered only after the damage to the product surface becomes visible.
The lifecycle of the cigarette beetle passes through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The larvae are the primary damaging life stage. They tunnel into the product, feeding on the interior while remaining hidden, which often allows an infestation to grow unnoticed for a considerable amount of time.
The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by numerous circular exit holes and the accumulation of powdery frass. Severe infestations can result in the complete destruction of the nutritional value and physical integrity of the stored goods, rendering them unsaleable.
