Systematic position: The blue-headed weevil (Lasiorhynchites caeruleocephalus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Rhynchitidae. It is a significant pest known for its specialized feeding habits on deciduous fruit trees, which can lead to substantial agricultural losses if left unmanaged.

Host plants: This pest primarily affects a wide range of fruit crops including apple, pear, plum, cherry, and apricot trees. It is frequently observed in home orchards and commercial plantations where it targets both the buds and the developing fruits during the spring growing season.

Biology and lifecycle: The adult weevils overwinter in the soil or under leaf litter. As temperatures rise in early spring, they emerge to feed on succulent buds. Following a mating period, females deposit eggs into the tissues of fruits or leaf stalks, often creating a specific incision that causes the plant part to wilt, which protects the developing larvae.

Damage and economic impact: The primary economic damage is caused by the adults destroying buds, which directly reduces the flowering potential and future yield. Larval feeding inside the fruit leads to premature fruit drop and rot. Repeated infestations weaken the trees, making them more susceptible to secondary infections and environmental stresses.

Control measures: Management of Lasiorhynchites caeruleocephalus requires an integrated pest management strategy:

• Cultivation of the soil under the tree canopy to disrupt the pupation process.
• Strict sanitation protocols, including the collection and disposal of fallen fruit and infested leaves.
