Systematic position: Lasiorhynchites cavifrons belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Rhynchitidae. It is a specific type of weevil that is well-known in forestry, but it also causes significant economic damage to agricultural orchards when natural hosts are scarce or populations reach peak density.

Crops affected: While primary hosts are oak trees, the pest frequently migrates to fruit-bearing orchards. Common targets include apple, pear, plum, and apricot trees. Both the generative organs (fruits and buds) and the young shoots of these trees are susceptible to the pest's activity.

Biology and life cycle: The insect follows a seasonal life cycle synchronized with the phenological development of its host plants. Overwintering occurs in the pupal stage within the soil. As temperatures rise in spring, adults emerge to feed on developing foliage, then proceed to mating and oviposition. Females deposit eggs into fruits or young shoots, ensuring suitable conditions for larval growth.

Damage and economic impact: Adult weevils cause direct injury by drilling deep holes into developing fruits, which leads to rotting and premature fruit drop. Larvae bore into shoots or fruits, causing structural damage and stunted growth. If left uncontrolled, the presence of these beetles can lead to significant yield losses and weakened tree vitality.

Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling Lasiorhynchites cavifrons effectively:

• Sanitation, including the collection and destruction of fallen fruit and infested leaves.
• Tillage and cultivation under tree canopies to disrupt the overwintering habitat.
• Manual removal by shaking beetles from trees early in the morning when they are sluggish.
• Timely application of contact or systemic insecticides during the peak activity period of the adults.
