The Lecanodiaspis scale is a genus of insects within the family Lecanodiaspididae, belonging to the order Hemiptera. These pests are recognized for their cryptic nature, parasitizing the bark and stems of various trees and shrubs. Often, their presence remains undetected until the host plant exhibits significant signs of stress and decline.

This pest affects a diverse range of host plants, including forest trees, fruit-bearing species, and ornamental shrubs. Depending on the region, Lecanodiaspis can infest oaks, chestnuts, nut-bearing trees, and various exotic plants used in landscape design. Trees that are already weakened by environmental stress are particularly susceptible to severe infestations.

The life cycle of this pest involves egg, nymph (crawler), and adult stages. Females are generally sessile and protected by a dense, waxy, or sclerotized cover, which acts as a robust shield against adverse weather and predators. Dispersal typically occurs during the crawler stage, where young nymphs actively move across the plant in search of optimal feeding sites.

The primary economic damage is caused by the continuous extraction of plant sap, which leads to general physiological exhaustion. In cases of high population density, the bark becomes covered in a crust of scale covers, causing shoot deformation, premature leaf drop, and dieback of branches. Additionally, the insects secrete honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold, further impeding photosynthesis and plant vigor.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted strategy that integrates horticultural practices with chemical controls. Regular monitoring and sanitary pruning of heavily infested branches are essential first steps. Recommended control measures include:
