Description
The mesquite scale (Lecanodiaspis prosopidis) is a small insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Lecanodiaspididae. These insects are classified as sedentary sap-sucking pests that reside primarily on the woody parts of their host plants, hidden beneath protective wax coverings.
This species primarily infests plants of the Prosopis genus, commonly known as mesquite trees. While often found in arid and semi-arid landscapes, they can become a significant nuisance in managed areas, nurseries, and urban landscapes where trees are already prone to environmental stress.
The biology of Lecanodiaspis prosopidis is centered on a specialized life cycle. Adult females develop a waxy test or shell that provides protection against predators and desiccation. The primary stage of dispersal occurs when the first-instar larvae, known as crawlers, emerge and move to find a suitable feeding site on the host plant tissue.
Damage caused by this scale involves the removal of phloem sap, which deprives the tree of essential nutrients. Chronic infestations lead to symptoms such as stunted growth, yellowing leaves, dieback of twigs, and an overall reduction in tree vigor. The presence of these insects can also facilitate the growth of sooty mold due to honeydew secretion.
Management strategies focus on timing and cultural practices. Chemical control is most effective when targeted at the crawler stage, utilizing systemic insecticides for better penetration. In addition to chemical intervention, arborists recommend maintaining tree health through proper irrigation and the pruning of heavily infested branches to reduce the total population density.
