Description

The two-striped tobacco beetle (Lema bilineata) is a member of the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae) within the order Coleoptera. This species is widely recognized as a significant pest, particularly in regions where tobacco is cultivated as a commercial crop.

The beetle primarily targets plants within the Solanaceae family. Tobacco is the preferred host, where the insect can cause severe damage at various growth stages. Both adults and larvae contribute to the defoliation of the crop, which poses a serious economic threat to tobacco production.

The life cycle of Lema bilineata consists of distinct developmental stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs directly on the foliage. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin feeding, moving through several instars before transitioning to the pupal stage, often in the soil or protected leaf crevices.
