Description
Systematic position. Lema coronata is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. Like many leaf beetles, it is characterized by specialized feeding habits that can impact both agricultural and wild host plants depending on the environmental conditions.
Crops and economic importance. This pest primarily targets various cereal crops and specific host plants within its habitat. By feeding on the foliage, the beetle reduces the plant's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis, which leads to stunted development and direct loss of agricultural productivity.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Overwintering occurs in the adult stage within soil crevices or beneath plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge to feed on host plants, mate, and deposit eggs on the leaves to begin the next generation.
Nature of damage. Both adults and larvae contribute to foliage destruction. They skeletonize leaves by feeding on the leaf tissue between the veins, often leaving the main veins intact. Severe infestations can cause leaf necrosis, premature wilting, and may necessitate corrective action to prevent widespread crop yield depletion.
Control measures. Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize economic losses:
- Implement proper crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle.
- Practice deep tillage after harvest to disturb overwintering sites.
- Use selective insecticides when pest populations exceed the economic threshold.
