Description

Systematic position: The lily beetle (Lema diversa), often associated with the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae) within the order Coleoptera, is a highly destructive pest. It is recognized for its specialized feeding habits and can cause rapid defoliation of host plants if left unmanaged.

Host plants: The primary hosts of this beetle are plants belonging to the Lilium and Fritillaria genera. Both wild and cultivated garden lilies are susceptible to infestations, which can quickly compromise the aesthetic value and overall health of these ornamental species.

Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles overwinter in the soil or protected areas near host plants. In early spring, they emerge to feed and mate. Females lay small, bright orange eggs on the undersides of leaves. The larvae, which possess a distinctive habit of covering themselves in their own frass for protection, feed voraciously before descending into the soil to pupate.

Damage and harmfulness: Both adults and larvae cause severe damage by consuming leaf tissue, often leaving large, irregular holes or stripping the foliage entirely. In cases of high infestation, the insects also attack stems and buds, which stunts growth and significantly reduces the flowering potential of the plants for the following season.

Control measures: A multi-faceted approach is required to minimize damage and population numbers:

  • Manual removal of adults and larvae from leaves, especially in the early morning.
  • Frequent inspection and destruction of leaf-bound egg clusters.
  • Application of systemic insecticides when necessary, focusing on the undersides of leaves.
  • Maintaining garden hygiene by clearing debris where adults might hibernate during winter.
