The three-lined potato beetle (Lema trilinea) is a member of the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae) within the order Coleoptera. As a specialized agricultural pest, it primarily targets plants in the Solanaceae family, making it a significant challenge for growers of potatoes, tomatoes, and other related nightshade crops across various regions.

This pest mainly feeds on solanaceous crops. Potatoes are the most commonly damaged host, although the insect can also thrive on tomatoes, peppers, and various wild species like black nightshade. Its ability to utilize weed hosts provides a continuous food supply and refuge, which complicates eradication efforts in commercial field operations.

The biological cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs primarily as adults in the soil or under surface debris. As temperatures rise in spring, the beetles emerge, feed, and mate. Females deposit eggs on the foliage, and the emerging larvae begin feeding immediately, characterized by their distinct habit of covering themselves with their own frass for protection.

Damage is characterized by irregular skeletonization of leaves and large, ragged holes. Both the larvae and adults feed aggressively on the leaf tissue. Severe infestations can result in total defoliation of the plants, which drastically reduces the plant's capacity for photosynthesis, stunts overall growth, and results in a significant reduction in tuber yield or fruit development.

Management strategies for this pest should be multifaceted. Cultural controls are essential, including crop rotation, sanitation of field borders, and the removal of weeds that serve as alternate hosts. When populations exceed the economic threshold, chemical control using registered insecticides is required. It is recommended to use integrated pest management (IPM) techniques to ensure long-term sustainability and efficacy.
