Lema tristis is a species of beetle belonging to the family Chrysomelidae (leaf beetles) and the order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in regions where cereal crops are grown, posing a constant challenge to plant health and agricultural productivity.
The host range of Lema tristis is primarily restricted to members of the Poaceae family. The most susceptible crops include barley, wheat, rye, and oats. The pest exploits these crops throughout its life cycle, utilizing both leaves and stems as primary food sources for different developmental stages.
The life cycle of the beetle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adults overwinter in protected areas, such as the upper layer of soil or crop debris. In the spring, they emerge to feed and reproduce, depositing eggs onto host foliage. Larvae emerge shortly after and undergo several instars before burrowing into the soil to pupate.

Larvae consume the mesophyll of the leaf, leaving the lower epidermis intact, which creates characteristic pale or white stripes. This destruction impairs the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis, significantly weakening the crop and ultimately reducing grain yields.

Cultural practices, such as deep autumn plowing to disturb pupal chambers and the selection of optimal planting dates, are essential.
