The ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) belongs to the Felidae family, order Carnivora. Although biologically it is a specialized carnivorous predator, in tropical and subtropical agriculture it can indirectly or directly impact agroecosystems by encroaching onto farm properties.
In the context of agriculture, the ocelot is not a pest in the classic phytophagous sense, as it does not consume vegetative parts of crops. However, it causes damage by impacting infrastructure and preying on small animals that act as natural regulators for rodent pests. In rare instances, the active movement of individuals through plantations leads to mechanical damage to delicate sprouts and cultivated plant stands.
The biology of the ocelot involves a complex developmental cycle typical of medium-sized predators. Sexual maturity is reached at 1.5–2 years, and the reproductive period is not seasonal. Within agroecosystems, the presence of the ocelot causes stress to poultry and small livestock, which indirectly impacts the productivity of farming operations integrated with the livestock sector.
The damage patterns are primarily mechanical or behavioral. The ocelot is capable of trampling crops, damaging fences, and disrupting drip irrigation systems while passing through fields. Its harmfulness increases when it begins to hunt domestic animals, forcing farmers to take measures that may negatively affect other elements of the local ecosystem.
