Transparent tussock moth

The Transparent tussock moth (Leucoma diaphana) is a lepidopteran pest belonging to the family Erebidae. This species is recognized for its potential to cause localized outbreaks that result in significant damage to forest stands and agricultural orchards.

This pest is highly polyphagous, targeting a wide range of host plants. Preferred hosts include various species of the Rosaceae family, such as apple, pear, and plum, as well as deciduous forest trees like poplars and willows. Its ability to thrive on diverse vegetation makes it a resilient inhabitant of diverse ecosystems.

The lifecycle consists of complete metamorphosis. Depending on the geographical region, the insect can produce several generations per year. Adults are nocturnal, and females typically lay eggs in clusters on the foliage or bark. The larval stage is the most destructive period, during which the caterpillars feed voraciously on the host plant's leaves.

The damage caused by Leucoma diaphana manifests as significant defoliation, starting from the leaf margins and proceeding towards total leaf tissue consumption. This reduction in foliage hampers the tree's ability to perform photosynthesis, ultimately leading to stunted growth, reduced fruit production, and lowered resistance to secondary diseases.
