Leucothrips

Leucothrips is a genus of insects belonging to the order Thysanoptera, specifically the family Thripidae. These minute, slender insects are known as significant plant pests, primarily affecting greenhouse and ornamental plants, often causing substantial economic losses in commercial horticulture.

The host range of Leucothrips is diverse, including various ornamental foliage plants. Common hosts often include members of families such as Araceae and Gesneriaceae. In indoor environments, they frequently infest ficus species, ferns, and various exotic indoor plants, thriving in stable, controlled environments.

The life cycle of Leucothrips involves several developmental stages: egg, larva, propupa, pupa, and adult. They are typically found on the undersides of leaves, where they feed by piercing the plant cells and sucking out the sap. The high reproductive rate in warm conditions allows populations to build up very rapidly.

Damage caused by these thrips manifests as silvering or chlorotic streaking on the foliage. As the infestation progresses, leaves may become distorted, develop necrotic spots, or drop prematurely. The presence of tiny black fecal specks on the leaf surface is a diagnostic feature used by agronomists to confirm the presence of this pest.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy.

• Regular monitoring of foliage for early detection of damage.
• Placement of yellow or blue sticky traps to capture adults.
• Application of systemic insecticides or contact treatments containing spinosad or other approved chemicals.
• Maintaining proper humidity and sanitation practices to disrupt the pest life cycle.
