Description

Limnodrilus is a genus of tubificid oligochaete worms belonging to the family Naididae. While often perceived as decomposers in aquatic environments, they are recognized as significant pests in agriculture, specifically in paddy fields where they interact with the root systems of submerged crops such as rice.

The primary crops affected by these worms are young rice plants. Limnodrilus feeds on the tender roots, causing substantial mechanical damage during the early developmental stages of the crop. This feeding behavior disrupts nutrient uptake and can lead to stunted growth, reduced vigor, and the eventual death of young seedlings if the infestation level is high.

The biology of Limnodrilus is characterized by its adaptation to anaerobic or semi-anaerobic conditions in muddy substrates. They reproduce by laying cocoons in the soil, and the life cycle is highly dependent on water temperature and organic content in the sediment. Warm water conditions significantly accelerate their reproductive rates, leading to rapid population explosions.
