Limnodrilus socialis is a species of aquatic oligochaete belonging to the family Tubificidae within the order Haplotaxida. While often associated with aquatic ecosystems, in specific agricultural settings such as flooded rice paddies, this organism can act as a significant pest, disrupting the standard development of the crop.

The primary crop impacted by Limnodrilus socialis is rice (Oryza sativa). The pest thrives in the submerged, organic-rich environments typical of traditional paddy cultivation. It targets the plant during the critical establishment phase, when the seedlings are highly susceptible to disturbances in the soil layer immediately surrounding their root systems.

The biology of these worms is characterized by rapid reproduction rates and the ability to thrive in low-oxygen benthic environments. They form dense, colonial aggregations in the silt, which is the origin of their name. Their life cycle relies on continuous moisture, and they are capable of producing numerous egg cocoons within the soil substrate.

The damage is primarily mechanical and physiological. As the worms feed and burrow, they physically disrupt the soil structure around the root zone, damaging fine root hairs. This interferes with the plant's nutrient uptake, leading to stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and in severe cases, the lodging or death of young seedlings during the early vegetation stage.

Effective management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key control methods include:
