This insect is a significant pest known for its specialized diet, focusing primarily on various cereal crops and grasses. Its presence in agricultural fields often poses a threat to the stability of grain production across temperate regions.
The host range of this pest includes major agricultural staples such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats. By feeding on both wild grasses and cultivated grains, the species can maintain high population densities throughout the growing season, effectively migrating from surrounding vegetation into developing crop fields during spring.
The biology of Limothrips angulicornis is characterized by multiple generations per year. Fertilized females overwinter in soil debris, leaf litter, or crevices in bark. When temperatures rise, they emerge and migrate to young cereal plants to lay eggs into leaf tissues. The developmental stages include the egg, two larval instars, propupa, pupa, and finally, the winged adult stage.
