The sheep louse, scientifically known as Linognathus ovillus, belongs to the family Linognathidae within the order Phthiraptera. It is a highly specialized ectoparasite that spends its entire life cycle on the host, specifically targeting sheep. Unlike other species, this louse primarily feeds on blood, which makes it a significant health concern in sheep husbandry worldwide.
The biological cycle involves eggs (nits) cemented onto wool fibers near the skin surface, followed by three nymphal stages before reaching adulthood. The entire process takes approximately 3 to 4 weeks under optimal conditions. These parasites are highly host-specific and cannot survive for long periods off the sheep, making direct contact the primary mode of transmission between animals.
Damage caused by Linognathus ovillus is primarily driven by the intense pruritus (itching) they induce. Infested sheep show signs of restlessness, rubbing against fences, and biting at their fleece. This behavior results in mechanical damage to the wool, causing matting, breakage, and substantial loss of fleece quality, which directly impacts market value.
The economic impact of a louse infestation is significant, leading to anemia, weight loss, and reduced productivity. In severe cases, the constant blood-feeding stresses the animal, suppressing its immune system and making it more susceptible to secondary bacterial infections. Lambs and stressed animals are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of the parasite burden.
Effective management strategies require a combination of chemical control and good flock hygiene. Targeted treatment involves the use of registered insecticides applied as dips, sprays, or pour-on formulations. Regular inspection and strict quarantine measures for newly introduced sheep are essential practices to minimize the risk of spreading the parasite within a healthy flock.
