Little blue cattle louse

The little blue cattle louse (Solenopotes capillatus) is an ectoparasite belonging to the order Phthiraptera and the family Linognathidae. It is recognized as one of the most common and damaging species of sucking lice that affect domestic cattle worldwide, distinguished by its small size and dark bluish-grey abdominal appearance.

While this pest is not an agricultural crop pathogen, it is a significant veterinary issue. By infesting cattle, it impacts the efficiency of livestock operations, leading to decreased animal performance. The parasite remains permanently on the host, moving along the hair and piercing the skin to feed on blood and interstitial fluids.

The biology of Solenopotes capillatus involves a complete life cycle on the host, consisting of eggs, three nymphal stages, and the adult stage. Eggs are glued firmly to individual hair shafts near the skin surface. The development rate is heavily influenced by the animal's coat density and the ambient temperature, with higher infestation levels typically observed during the colder winter months.

The damage caused by these lice manifests as severe skin irritation and intense itching. Cattle often rub against fences or stall equipment, causing hair loss and potential self-inflicted wounds. The stress and blood loss associated with heavy infestations result in reduced weight gain, lower milk production, and an overall weakened physical condition of the herd.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

• Applying approved pour-on, spray, or injectable insecticides that target sucking lice.
• Conducting whole-herd treatments to prevent re-infestation from untreated carriers.
• Maintaining proper nutritional standards to boost the animal's immune system against parasitic stress.
