Rice water weevil

The rice water weevil (Lissorhoptrus foveolatus) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is considered one of the most destructive pests in rice-producing regions globally, specifically known for its unique adaptation to aquatic environments where rice is grown.

The pest primarily targets rice plants (Oryza sativa). While adult weevils feed on the foliage, creating characteristic narrow longitudinal slits, it is the larval stage that causes the most severe economic damage. The larvae inhabit the flooded soil around the roots, feeding extensively on the root system, which severely compromises the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients.

The life cycle consists of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Adults overwinter in protected areas, moving into rice paddies once the fields are flooded. Eggs are deposited into the leaf sheaths below the water line. The larvae emerge and migrate down to the roots, where they undergo development, spending their entire larval stage underwater, which makes chemical control particularly challenging.

Symptoms of infestation include leaf scarring caused by adults and stunted, yellowed plants caused by larval root feeding. Severe root pruning leads to reduced tillering and plant vigor. In cases of heavy infestation, rice fields may show significant stand loss, leading to substantial yield reductions, sometimes exceeding 40% if management practices are not implemented timely.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:

• Water management practices, such as draining fields temporarily to disrupt the larval cycle.
• Use of resistant rice cultivars where available.
• Application of systemic insecticides treated on seeds or at the early seedling stage.
• Maintaining sanitation of field borders to eliminate overwintering sites.
