Description
The rice water weevil (Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is considered one of the most destructive pests affecting rice production globally, capable of causing substantial yield losses if not managed properly.
The primary host for this pest is cultivated rice. Adult weevils feed on the leaves of rice plants, creating characteristic narrow longitudinal scars. However, the most severe damage is caused by the larval stage, which feeds on the root system under the water surface, severely compromising the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients.
The lifecycle is aquatic. Adults overwinter in ground debris and migrate to flooded rice fields in the spring. Females deposit eggs into the leaf sheaths below the water level. Larvae emerge and move down into the soil to feed on roots through several instars. After completing their development, they construct a pupal cell attached to the roots and eventually emerge as adults.
Infestation symptoms include leaf scarring in adults and stunted growth, yellowing, and plant wilting in the case of larval root pruning. High densities of larvae can lead to root system destruction, which directly impacts the plant's yield potential, causing fewer tillers, delayed maturity, and a significant reduction in the weight of the panicles.
Effective management strategies combine cultural, chemical, and biological approaches. Agronomic practices like controlled irrigation, which involves draining the fields for a specific period, can effectively disrupt the larval stage. Chemical control is often applied via seed treatment or foliar insecticides targeting adults during their colonization phase to prevent significant oviposition.
