Description

Lithocolletis, now commonly classified under the genus Phyllonorycter, is a genus of moths belonging to the Gracillariidae family. These insects are well-known as leaf miners, meaning their larvae feed within the internal tissues of host plant leaves, creating distinct tunnels or blotches throughout their development.

The pest primarily targets fruit-bearing trees such as apples, pears, and cherries, though various hardwood species are also susceptible. The impact is most severe in commercial orchards where high population densities can lead to significant aesthetic and physiological damage to the foliage, weakening the overall tree health.

The life cycle involves multiple generations per year, depending on the climatic region. Female moths deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves, and upon hatching, the larvae tunnel directly into the leaf parenchyma. This mining activity destroys the photosynthetic cells, causing the leaf to lose its green color and eventually wither.

The economic damage caused by Lithocolletis is significant, particularly due to reduced yields and inferior fruit quality. Severe infestations lead to premature defoliation, which impairs the tree's ability to store energy for the following season. This long-term stress can make trees more susceptible to other diseases and winter damage.
