Description
The Hawthorn moth (Lithocolletis crataegella) is a small lepidopteran belonging to the Gracillariidae family. As a leaf-mining insect, its larvae feed inside the foliage of host trees, creating characteristic patterns. Adult moths are typically nocturnal, with a wingspan of less than 10 millimeters, often displaying distinct metallic or brownish markings on their wings.
The species primarily targets plants within the Rosaceae family. Its hosts include apple trees, pears, hawthorn, cherries, and plums. While it is often found in wild environments, it can migrate to commercial orchards and home gardens, causing significant concern for fruit producers.
The lifecycle consists of several generations per year, depending on the geographical region and weather conditions. Overwintering occurs at the pupal stage, usually hidden within fallen, infested leaves. When spring temperatures rise, the adults emerge to mate and lay eggs on the undersides of young leaves, initiating the cycle of infestation for the growing season.
Damage is characterized by distinct blotch-like mines on the leaves, where larvae consume the internal parenchyma tissue while leaving the upper and lower epidermis intact. Severe infestations lead to premature leaf drop, reduced photosynthesis, and a overall decline in tree health. This results in smaller fruit size and reduced yield efficiency over time.
Management of this pest relies on integrated pest management (IPM) techniques. Cultural practices such as removing and destroying fallen leaf litter are essential to reduce the overwintering population. Chemical control involving targeted insecticides should be timed during the egg-hatching phase. Regular monitoring of the canopy is vital to decide the appropriate timing for intervention and ensure the protection of the trees.
