The apple leaf miner (Lithocolletis ringoniella) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gracillariidae. This small moth causes significant damage to orchard ecosystems worldwide by targeting the foliage of fruit-bearing trees, primarily focusing on apple cultivars.
While apple trees are the primary host, this pest can also inhabit pear, quince, and other related rosaceous plants. The larvae feed on the leaf tissues, creating tunnels that destroy the internal structure of the leaf, which is vital for the tree's overall metabolism and energy production.
The insect's life cycle typically spans several generations per season, depending on environmental temperature and humidity levels.
