Description
Taxonomic position: The aspen blotch miner (Lithocolletis tremuloidiella, also known as Phyllonorycter tremuloidiella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Gracillariidae. It is a micro-moth species that specializes in feeding on the foliage of trees within the genus Populus.
Host plants and damage: The primary host is the common aspen (Populus tremula), though it can also infest other poplar varieties. The larvae feed on the leaf tissues, creating mines that result in aesthetic damage and loss of leaf vigor. Severe infestations can cause premature leaf drop, stressing the trees during the critical growing season.
Biology and life cycle: The species typically undergoes two or more generations per year depending on the climate. The pupal stage is the overwintering phase, usually occurring within the fallen leaf litter on the forest floor. In spring, the adult moths emerge, mate, and deposit eggs on the undersides of the leaves, starting the annual life cycle.
Signs of infestation: The characteristic damage manifests as blotch mines on the underside of the leaves. As the larvae feed, they consume the green tissue between the epidermal layers, causing the leaf to turn pale or brownish in those specific areas. The upper leaf surface often becomes wrinkled or slightly inflated due to the internal mining activity.
Control measures: Sanitation is the primary method of control; removing and destroying fallen leaves in the autumn reduces the overwintering pupal population significantly. In ornamental or nursery settings, systemic insecticides applied during the peak flight period of the adults can effectively manage outbreaks. Maintaining overall tree health through proper watering and fertilization also helps mitigate the impact of the pest.
