Lobometopon

Lobometopon belongs to the family Tenebrionidae (darkling beetles) within the order Coleoptera. These insects are specialized pests primarily found in arid and semi-arid regions. Systematically, they represent a group of beetles adapted to extreme environmental conditions, where their population density can increase significantly during periods of drought.

The main crops susceptible to damage by this pest include cereals, legumes, and certain technical crops. Both larvae and adult beetles feed on the underground parts of plants, including seedlings, roots, and seeds. In field crop rotation systems, the activity of Lobometopon can lead to thin stands and a reduction in the overall yield potential of crops.

The biology of the species is closely linked to soil temperature and moisture regimes. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult beetles are primarily nocturnal, showing higher activity during the night or periods of increased humidity. The larvae exhibit high resistance to adverse environmental factors, making their natural regulation in agroecosystems difficult.

Damage is typically characterized by the severing of roots and stems at the soil surface level. Plants damaged at early stages usually wilt and die, leading to the formation of bare patches in the fields. The pest is most destructive during the germination and seedling emergence phase, when plant tissues are most tender and vulnerable to the mechanical action of the beetles' mouthparts.

Effective crop protection requires a comprehensive approach, combining agrotechnical and chemical methods. Important strategies include proper crop rotation, deep autumn plowing to destroy larvae, and optimization of planting dates. In cases of high pest density, the use of systemic insecticidal seed treatments is advisable, as this provides protection for young plants during their most critical early growth stages.
