Locust

The locust (lat. Locusta) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. Locusts are among the most destructive agricultural pests globally, known for their ability to transition into swarming behavior, which results in the consumption of massive amounts of vegetation and significant economic impact on global food security.

These insects are polyphagous, meaning they feed on a vast array of plant species. They pose a severe threat to cereals (wheat, barley, maize), legumes, industrial crops such as sunflowers, and various vegetable gardens. In regions with frequent outbreaks, they can wipe out entire plantations and pastures within a very short period.

The biological cycle of the locust involves two distinct phases: solitary and gregarious. When population density increases, they transform into the gregarious phase, characterized by changes in color, morphology, and migratory behavior. The life cycle consists of three stages: egg (which overwinters in soil), nymph (going through five instar stages), and adult (imago). This is known as incomplete metamorphosis.

The damage caused by locusts is characterized by severe defoliation. Using powerful mandibles, both nymphs and adults consume leaves, stems, and fruits, leaving fields bare. This herbivory significantly reduces photosynthetic capacity and causes total crop failure. The rapid migration of swarms makes them particularly difficult to manage in real-time.

Effective management strategies rely on proactive monitoring and integrated pest management (IPM). Key strategies include:

• Detection of egg-laying sites and destruction via deep plowing.
• Timely application of contact and systemic insecticides during the nymphal stages.
• Utilization of biological control agents such as specialized fungi (e.g., Metarhizium).
• Maintaining field borders and clearing tall weeds to discourage swarming.
• Coordinated regional surveillance to prevent the formation of massive migratory swarms.
