Description
Systematic position. Lomaspilis marginata, commonly known as the Clouded Border, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. It is a well-known moth species widely distributed across the Palearctic region, recognized by its distinctive wing pattern and larval feeding habits.
Crops affected. The larvae of this species are foliage feeders, primarily attacking various deciduous trees and shrubs. Preferred hosts include species such as willow (Salix), poplar (Populus), aspen, and birch (Betula). They may also be observed on hazel trees within forest margins or suburban gardens.
Biology and life cycle. This species typically produces one or two generations per year depending on environmental conditions. It overwinters in the pupal stage, usually buried in the soil or leaf litter beneath the host plant. Adult moths emerge in late spring, mate, and deposit eggs on the foliage, starting the feeding cycle of the larvae.
Damage and economic impact. The larval stage is the most destructive, as caterpillars consume leaf tissue. Initially, they create small holes, but as they grow, they can cause significant defoliation, stripping the trees of their photosynthetic organs. Heavy infestation results in reduced tree vigor, slowed growth, and increased vulnerability to secondary pests and pathogens.
Control measures. Management strategies focus on both cultural and chemical control. Maintaining hygiene by removing leaf litter helps reduce pupal survival during winter. In cases of severe outbreaks, targeted applications of insecticides during the early larval stages are recommended to minimize foliage loss and prevent further damage to the canopy.
