Lonchaea chorea

Description

Lonchaea chorea belongs to the order Diptera, family Lonchaeidae. These flies are often overlooked due to their dual nature as saprophages and secondary plant pests. While they primarily feed on decaying matter, they frequently opportunistically invade live plant tissues, particularly those already compromised by mechanical injury or environmental stress.

The pest affects a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops. Vegetable crops, such as onions, cabbages, and various root vegetables, are particularly susceptible to infestation. Additionally, fruit trees and berries can be damaged by this pest if the surface of the bark or fruits has been breached by other organisms or unfavorable conditions.

The life cycle of Lonchaea chorea follows the standard holometabolous development: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs in groups within crevices of plant stems, damaged fruit surfaces, or moist soil enriched with decomposing organic matter. The larvae develop rapidly, burrowing deep into the plant tissue, where they continue their life cycle until pupation.

The damage caused by this fly is primarily due to larvae boring into stems, bulbs, or fruits. This activity creates tunnels, which serve as entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, leading to rapid rotting of the plant parts. Consequently, this not only destroys the immediate yield but can also lead to the total collapse of the plant if the infestation is severe.

To mitigate the risks associated with this pest, integrated management strategies are required:

  • Implementation of proper crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle in the soil.
  • Strict sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of crop residues.
  • Prevention of mechanical damage to plants during agricultural operations.
  • Application of targeted insecticides during periods of peak adult fly activity.
