Description
The Anchusa flea beetle (Longitarsus anchusae) is a small insect belonging to the leaf beetle family, Chrysomelidae, within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are characterized by their jumping ability and specific host plant preferences, often impacting both wild flora and cultivated plants.
The host range is primarily focused on the Boraginaceae family. Agricultural damage is most frequently observed on plants such as Anchusa species and comfrey (Symphytum). While often considered a secondary pest, high populations can significantly affect plant health in specific environments.
The life cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults typically overwinter in soil debris or protected vegetation. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed and lay eggs, continuing the cycle throughout the growing season.
