Flax flea beetle

Systematic position: The flax flea beetle (Longitarsus longipennis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This species is a specialized agricultural pest that primarily targets flax plants, posing a significant challenge to farmers cultivating both fiber and oilseed flax varieties in various regions.

Crops and damage profile: The primary host plant is flax (Linum usitatissimum). Adult beetles feed on the cotyledons and young leaves of the seedlings, creating numerous small, shot-like holes. This type of damage is particularly devastating during the emergence phase, as it stunts plant growth and, under severe infestation, leads to the destruction of the entire stand.

Biology and life cycle: The insect overwinters as an adult in the soil or beneath crop residues. In the spring, when temperatures rise, the beetles emerge and begin feeding on early weeds before migrating to emerging flax crops. Females deposit eggs in the soil near the root zone; the emerging larvae consume plant roots, adding a second layer of damage to the host plant.

Economic impact: The pest's ability to proliferate rapidly under dry, warm conditions makes it highly dangerous. By damaging the photosynthetic apparatus of young seedlings, the flea beetle causes uneven plant development and a sharp reduction in yield. Furthermore, heavily attacked fields often require reseeding, leading to substantial financial losses and increased production costs.

Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest:

• Crop rotation with non-host plants to disrupt the life cycle.
• Field sanitation, including the removal of crop residues and control of host weeds.
• Seed treatment with systemic insecticides to provide early-season protection.
