Description

Systematic position. The flax flea beetle (Longitarsus obliteratoides) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. It is a specialized pest that primarily impacts flax cultivation, causing significant physiological and structural damage to the host plant during its most vulnerable developmental stages.

Crops and damage. The pest focuses on fiber flax and oilseed flax. Adult beetles chew small circular holes in the cotyledons and true leaves. This feeding pattern causes the leaves to curl, dry out, and eventually die. In heavy infestation scenarios, the growth points of young plants are destroyed, leading to thinning and reduced crop density.

Biology and lifecycle. The insect overwinters in the adult stage under plant debris or in soil crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, they migrate to flax fields to feed. Females deposit eggs in the soil near the host plants. The larvae develop within the soil, feeding on roots, which often complicates early identification of the infestation until surface symptoms appear.

Economic impact. The highest level of damage occurs during the seedling to "herringbone" stage of flax. Mass infestations can result in total crop failure or a significant reduction in the quality and quantity of the flax fiber. Weakened plants exhibit poor resistance to environmental stressors, such as drought or secondary fungal infections, leading to decreased yields.

Protection measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are essential for control. This includes crop rotation, avoiding planting flax in fields adjacent to the previous year's crops, and utilizing effective insecticide-treated seeds. During the growing season, if the pest population exceeds the economic threshold, foliar application of broad-spectrum or systemic insecticides is recommended.
