Description
The amber flea beetle (Longitarsus succineus) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. These small, jumping beetles are widely recognized as potential pests in various agricultural settings, known for their ability to thrive in diverse climatic conditions across the temperate zones.
This species primarily feeds on plants within the Asteraceae family. In agricultural practice, it is often associated with sunflower crops and various wild hosts. Both larvae and adults contribute to the damage, although the primary impact on crop yield is usually caused by adult feeding on emerging seedlings.
The biological cycle typically involves one generation per year, with adults overwintering in soil debris or under leaf litter. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on host foliage. Mating follows shortly thereafter, leading to egg-laying in the soil near the host plant base, where larvae subsequently complete their development.
The damage is characterized by "shot-hole" patterns on the leaves, where the beetles scrape or chew through the epidermis.
