Lophocampa ingens is a moth species belonging to the Erebidae family and the Arctiinae subfamily. Known for its distinct larval stage, this insect is recognized as a forest pest primarily found in Western North America, where it interacts with native coniferous tree species.

The primary hosts for this pest include various species of fir (Abies). Larvae exhibit social behavior, particularly in their early stages, residing within communal silken tents or webs constructed on the foliage of host trees. This social structure provides significant protection against predators and extreme environmental conditions.

The life cycle of Lophocampa ingens follows an annual pattern. Larvae emerge and develop through several instars throughout the spring and summer months. After feeding and growing, they construct cocoons, often incorporating their own larval hairs, which can be an irritant to skin, to pupate and eventually emerge as adult moths.

The damage caused by these caterpillars is characterized by extensive defoliation. While young larvae feed in groups, older larvae spread out across the host tree, consuming needles and causing visible thinning of the canopy.
