Black flower beetle

Luperomorpha funesta, commonly known as the black flower beetle, is a species of leaf beetle belonging to the family Chrysomelidae. Originally native to East Asia, it has become an invasive species in various parts of Europe, where it poses a significant threat to floriculture and landscape gardening.

The beetle is highly polyphagous regarding ornamental plants. It primarily targets flowers and foliage of species such as Iris, Hemerocallis, Dahlia, Chrysanthemum, and Rosa. By feeding on the internal tissues of buds and open flowers, the pest destroys the ornamental value of the plants, often causing complete failure of blooming.

The biology of the insect involves a multi-stage life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adults are small, black, metallic beetles capable of active flight. Larvae feed mostly underground or within stems, which makes early detection difficult. The generation time depends heavily on climatic conditions, with higher temperatures accelerating the beetle's development significantly.

The damage caused by Luperomorpha funesta is characterized by small, irregular holes in the petals and leaves. In severe infestations, the petals are reduced to skeletons or completely devoured. Furthermore, the feeding wounds create entry points for secondary plant pathogens, which can lead to rapid wilting or rotting of the flower heads.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as soil cultivation, regular weeding, and removing infested plant material can significantly limit pest population growth. Chemical control using systemic insecticides is generally required during the peak activity of adults. Monitoring populations with yellow sticky traps is a critical component of any successful management program.
