Pine leaf beetle

The Pine leaf beetle (Luperus pinicola) is a coleopteran insect belonging to the family Chrysomelidae. This species is recognized as a forest pest primarily associated with conifer trees, with a distribution range covering major parts of the temperate regions of Europe and Asia.

The primary host plants for Luperus pinicola are species of the genus Pinus, most notably the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). In some instances, it may also infest spruce trees. The impact is most significant in dense, young forest stands or managed nurseries, where the activity of the beetles can lead to rapid needle loss and reduced growth rates.

The biological cycle of this beetle consists of one generation per year. Adults emerge in early summer, feeding actively on the needles of host trees. Following the mating season, females deposit their eggs in the soil or leaf litter. The larval stage develops underground, feeding on small root systems of grasses or tree seedlings, and pupation occurs in the soil, leading to the emergence of the next generation of adults.

Damage is characterized by the consumption of the needle tissue, which causes the needles to wither and drop prematurely. As beetles typically feed gregariously, they can defoliate entire branches, giving the crown a sparse, scorched appearance. This defoliation stresses the tree, making it susceptible to secondary attacks by wood-boring insects or fungal pathogens.
