Copper butterfly

The genus Lycaena, commonly known as Copper butterflies, belongs to the family Lycaenidae within the order Lepidoptera. While often appreciated for their aesthetic beauty, some species in this genus can behave as agricultural pests, particularly when their larvae feed on cultivated vegetation.

These pests primarily target plants within the Polygonaceae family. Crops such as garden sorrel, rhubarb, and occasionally buckwheat are the most common hosts. Due to their specific dietary requirements, the presence of these butterflies can lead to significant localized destruction of leafy green crops.

The life cycle of the Copper butterfly follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs directly onto the leaves of host plants. The hatching larvae are voracious feeders, passing through several instars while consuming large quantities of plant tissue, which allows them to grow rapidly during the growing season.

The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by skeletonized leaves or irregular holes chewed through the leaf blades. In cases of high infestation, the larvae can strip a plant bare, leaving only the primary veins. This reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant and renders the produce unsuitable for market.

Chemical intervention should be considered only as a last resort, strictly adhering to pre-harvest intervals to ensure safety.
