Sciarid fly

Systematic position. The sciarid fly Lycoriella auripila belongs to the order Diptera and the family Sciaridae. These small, dark-colored flies are frequently encountered in habitats characterized by high humidity and organic decomposition, making them a common issue in commercial mushroom facilities and greenhouse environments.

Crops and damage. This pest primarily targets commercial mushroom crops such as button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) and oyster mushrooms. The larvae consume the mycelium and bore into the stalks and caps of fruiting bodies. In horticultural settings, they affect seedlings by feeding on root hairs, which compromises the nutrient uptake and often results in root rot or seedling damping-off.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs in moist, nutrient-rich substrates. The larvae have a distinctive shiny black head and feed primarily in the upper layers of the growing medium. Given optimal moisture and temperature (above 20°C), a generation can be completed within a few weeks, leading to rapid infestations.

Economic importance. Beyond direct consumption of plant tissues and mushrooms, Lycoriella auripila is a significant vector for various pathogens. The larvae transport spores of fungi (e.g., Fusarium, Pythium) and bacteria through the growing medium. This dual threat of direct feeding and disease transmission makes them one of the most critical pests in mushroom production and nursery management.

Control measures. Successful management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

• Heat pasteurization of the growing substrate to eliminate eggs and larvae.
• Use of yellow sticky cards to monitor adult flight activity and reduce population size.
• Introduction of biological control agents, specifically entomopathogenic nematodes like Steinernema feltiae.
• Regulating moisture levels to avoid saturated substrate conditions.
• Strict sanitation protocols, including the removal of spent mushroom compost and plant debris.
