Description

Systematic position: Lycoriella castanescens belongs to the order Diptera and the family Sciaridae, commonly known as fungus gnats. These small flies are major pests in indoor agricultural environments, especially where organic matter and high moisture levels are present.

Crops affected: The primary hosts include mushrooms such as Agaricus bisporus (button mushrooms) and oyster mushrooms. Furthermore, they frequently infest greenhouse crops, seedlings, cuttings, and indoor ornamental plants grown in peat-based media.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in moist, nutrient-rich substrates. The larvae feed primarily on fungi and decaying organic matter, but when populations are high, they consume live plant roots and stem tissue.

Damage and pest status: Larval feeding causes wilting, stunted growth, and death of seedlings due to root pruning. In mushroom farming, the larvae bore into the caps and stalks of the mushrooms, introducing pathogens and causing significant quantitative and qualitative losses to the harvest.

Yellow sticky traps are used for monitoring adults, while biological control agents like Steinernema feltiae nematodes or microbial insecticides are effective against larvae.
