Description

The mushroom sciarid fly (Lycoriella solani) is a member of the Diptera order and the Sciaridae family. It is recognized as a significant pest in commercial mushroom production worldwide, capable of causing substantial yield losses if not properly managed through sanitation and monitoring.

This pest primarily attacks cultivated mushrooms, such as Agaricus bisporus. In addition to mushroom houses, these flies are frequently found in greenhouses and nurseries, where larvae thrive in moist, organic-rich soil and can damage the roots of various ornamental plants.

The development cycle of Lycoriella solani includes the egg, four larval instars, pupa, and adult stages. The lifespan of the adult fly is short, yet females can lay hundreds of eggs in the casing layer, facilitating rapid population growth within closed environments.

Larval feeding is the primary cause of damage. Larvae tunnel into mushroom stalks and caps, making the produce commercially unacceptable. Furthermore, they are notorious vectors for pathogenic fungi (such as Trichoderma) and bacteria, which can devastate an entire growing cycle.
